Parenting Book Club!

I have two young kids and I’m not going to lie, sometimes it can really be a challenge! A couple of years ago, I purchased a book that I found incredibly helpful. My husband and I read it together and found it to be a very good tool in our parenting toolbox. You know how it is, things got busy, we stopped reading regularly and then forgot about the book. We’re at a point that we found ourselves reaching for our toolbox and the chapter we left off on was the perfect tool for the issue!

How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk” is great for parents with kids of any age. It’s been hailed as the parenting Bible and for good reason. Whether you are really struggling with your children or there’s just room for improvement, I can’t recommend this book enough. It has very valuable communication methods that honestly are good skills to have even if you don’t have children. I found myself putting this into practice in every area of my life. My husband and I are picking up where we left off but I thought it would also be fun to read as a parenting book club!

Click on the book above and purchase in the format that’s easiest for you to read. I prefer paperback or hardback but if you want to read during your lunch hour or whenever you have time, the ebook version might be a good option. I encourage you to read it with your partner even if they don’t want to be part of the weekly discussion. It’s a great way for both of you to be on the same page because you’ll be putting things into practice. It’s better they have an understanding of the reasoning behind the methods and changes rather than just communicate things will be different. It’s also a great opportunity for conversation as many talking points will encourage discussion.

The chapters are on the longer side, so instead of reading a chapter a week, I’ll break it down into weekly units (around 10 pages give or take). The chapters are nicely structured with a main topic, ideas of how to incorporate it, stories from other parents, and notes. What I’ll do is include a link to a private page in my regular parenting posts on Mondays. That way only those that want to read it and be part of the discussion will have access to the conversation on the password protected page.

I’m excited to open the platform to this conversation with other parents. I’m interested to see what you think about it, how it can help you in your parenting dynamic, and what tools it can add to your parenting toolbox. The first discussion will be published June 5th. That’s three weeks away and should be plenty of time to get the book at your local library or from your favorite book source if you order it now. I look forward to this online parenting book club!

    1. It’s really good! Not just to be used with kids either, great reminders for communication that many of us are never taught or shown. I use the techniques with both my toddler and my 8-year-old. Great tools! You should join the book club… 🙂

    1. I absolutely love it! We fell out of the habit of reading it and just got back into it and it’s made such a difference! I even implement the techniques with my 2-year-old and it works so well! I’m glad you enjoyed it ❤

    1. It has such practical and useful information. It’s really helped me to find other ways to approach things and better ways to talk to my kids. Honestly, I even use the techniques with adults! Somethings aren’t new to me but things I wasn’t actively practicing. Others are new and I love them! Glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  1. Hi Niki,

We recentlyish moved to the country and and I miss my city book group. Been looking for something like this, so I’ll be participating. Perhaps a bit late for this month, but do consider me interested and thanks for opening the dialog on this. Would also be interested in maybe reading fiction with the the group? But really, any chance to read with a group and then talk about it is a good one!

    I’ll be back,
    Lorna x

    1. Hi Lorna, you aren’t late at all! If you’re interested, go ahead and sign up. We’ll be breaking down this book for a couple of months at least! This is all about combining what we read with action to implement it in our lives. We’ll discuss both the material we read and the experience we have. This won’t be your typical book club but I promise it will be worth it! Go ahead and get yours on order from the library or purchasing it so you can start in time with the group.

For the parenting group, I want books to be ones that can help us in our parenting journey. If there’s a fiction book that can bring that element in, I’d be more than happy to consider it. For now, this book will be the one we read for the next few months until we get through each unit.

Happy to have you on board ❤
