Don’t Cook Chili In A Pressure Cooker

On a lighter side, today’s lesson is not to cook chili in a pressure cooker… I made some white chicken chili (my favorite!) and figured I could swap the crock pot for the pressure cooker as I always do for sake of time (and because I don’t have a crockpot). Turns out I’ve never made a thicker sauce based dish in the pressure cooker and for good reason- it burns!! The entire bottom layer was burnt to a crisp. Thank goodness I realized something was off when the pressure cooker didn’t whistle when I anticipated it would. I turned off the pot and waited for the pressure to release. As soon as I opened the lid the smell confirmed what I thought. On the bright side I was able to save the rest of the pot and added a little extra cumin just in case. Next time I’ll slow cook in my huge wok and see how that goes.


Thank goodness it’s edible! I didn’t have a backup plan, not used to burning meals… :0

    1. Haha. I was pretty disappointed. It’s been a while since I’ve messed up a meal like that! It made it taste different but not bad. Thank goodness I was able to save it. I put the chili in a different pot as soon as I could open the pressure cooker. It didn’t quite hit the spot…shame seeing as I made the Alfredo sauce from scratch… 😦

I have one from a very long tine ago that is relevant to this time of year – don’t put chestnuts under the grill to ‘roast’ especially when your 80 year old grandad has come to stay for the first time and everyone is busy watching fireworks going off in the garden. All of a sudden we realised that all the bang, bang, bang was not our neighbour’s rockets going off but my chestnuts going ping ping ping all over the kitchen! What a mess! How embarrassed was I?!

    1. Oh my gosh!! Next Tuesday is the day of patron Saint Andres and the tradition in Spain is to roast chestnuts. I leave it to the street vendors to do it. I’m not big on chestnuts though. I go more for the glass of wine than the chestnuts. Thanks for sharing Chris!
