Grateful Sunday|Small Things In Summer

The smell takes me straight back to my childhood, reminds me of sunny days spent at the pool. Splashing, playing, screaming, laughing. With just one whiff I’m immediately transported in time to hot days full of sunshine, surrounded by those I loved most, and enjoying every moment of the day.

I’m flooded with wonderful memories every time I open it up and slather tiny arms, legs, noses and toes in it. I remember when I was that little person squirming, antsy and impatiently waiting to be slathered so I could jump into the pool. Funny how something can trigger such amazing feelings and memories. I hope that when my girls grow up and smell sunscreen they’re transported to the memories we’re making now. Running, jumping, laughing and playing. Burgers on the grill just because, music in the background, games in the pool and sunshine on our faces. I hope that something as little and silly as the smell of sunscreen floods their hearts with warmth and their head with beautiful childhood memories.

  1. Sounds like you’re creating some special memories for your family Niki. I have fond memories of my mum making lasagne, everything made lovingly from scratch and the smells wafting through her kitchen when I was a little girl was divine. xo

    1. I know! It’s crazy but every single time I smell sunscreen I’m taken to my childhood. I’m sure sunscreen doesn’t smell “good” but there are certain brands that especially take me back and I love the smell because of the memories they revive! ❤

  2. I LOVE this post! Did you know that smell is one of our most powerful triggers of memories? Even more powerful than any of our other sense triggers? The smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning takes me right back to my grandfather’s kitchen. If the hint of my aunt’s perfume ever tickles my nose, I am right back in her arms, wrapped up in her close hug. In fact, I have the fondest memory of a particular meal that we all shared at her house once – a turkey dinner. This particular turkey dinner stands out in my memory, even though we celebrate Thanksgiving at her house every year. I live very close to a barbecue restaurant now, and on some summer days, the air is heavy with the smell of cooking meat. It can be 100 degrees outside, but suddenly the breeze feels autumnal and I can visualize my cousins playing football in the backyard among the falling leaves. One day, your daughters will certainly find themselves flooded with their own scent-triggered memories. That you are mindful of wanting to create beautiful moments for them to remember… you are a very loving mom!

    1. Thank you for sharing all of those wonderful memories Lulu! I hope your heart is as full as mine right now in that magical way that only nostalgia can make you feel! I have my moments but I do my best to be mindful of how my actions and words impact these little people I’m so lucky to have ❤
