Kindness Challenge: Week 1 Focus- Self kindness

Attention all 2016 Kindness Challenge Participants!

Have you ever heard of the saying that “you have to love yourself before others can love you“? You have to love and accept yourself for who you are before you can expect for someone else to do so. Part of loving yourself is being kind to yourself.

Do you ever find yourself being nicer to others than you are to yourself? Do you think things that if said out loud would make you cringe? Are you too hard on yourself? Too critical? Are your expectations too high? This week the focus is on being kind and gentle with yourself so that you can extend that kindness towards others. How can others treat you the way you want to be treated if you don’t treat yourself that way?

This week’s focus is to be kind and gentle with yourself.

Week 1 exercises- Pick at least one of the following to help you incorporate this week’s focus in your life:

  • Think about something you’re grateful for
  • Tell yourself something that you love about yourself
  • Read an inspirational quote first thing in the morning
  • Wake up and think about 10 beautiful things in your life
  • Do something nice for yourself
  • Dedicate some time to yourself
  • Give yourself a break
  • Think of 5 good things for every negative thought
  • Come up with your own self-kindness exercise

Tip: If you find yourself being too hard or critical with yourself- acknowledge the thoughts or feelings, accept them for what they are in the moment you’re in, and release them. Take a deep breath in and when you breathe out through your mouth, imagine you blowing those thoughts as far away as you can. On the next breath in, inhale kindness, gentleness, love, peace, and utter positivity. Repeat as necessary.

Week 1 blog prompt- You pick the day to post after practicing the exercises for the week!

Post about this experience! How did you choose to start your day? Did you do the same thing every day? Did you do more than one thing? Did you come up with your own self-kindness exercise? What was it? Was this easier than you thought? Did it get easier as the week went on? Did you notice it change how you felt about the day? How did you feel on day one? How do you feel after a week of being kind to yourself? Did anyone notice anything different about you? Share this experience however you like!

    2. Totally agree, I’m not sure how I stumbled on her site but am so glad I did. This falls right in line with my own decisions to become more mindful and kind and to share that with others. I’m so happy to have found you Niki!! You’re doing such wonderful things and are quite the inspiration.

      1. I’m so humbled, you don’t know how much comments like these mean to me. It’s funny because I don’t go crazy with SEO or promoting my blog or anything like that. I’ve realized that those that find it are meant to and a lot of times when the timing is right. 🙂 Thank you for your encouraging words, they mean so much to me!

  4. Lovely post, I’m looking forward to this thank you. Thank you too for reminding us that it’s okay to think of ourselves sometimes. Life’s too fast I think this will help us all slow down a little and appreciate what we are and what we have.

  5. Reading the first post for the kindness challenge is the first thing I have done today on my blog, Niki it has been a challenging weekend for me, as my M.I.L was rushed into ER on Saturday Night and went through surgery the next day. That experience gave me a fresh perspective on life and brought out another side of me as a person. my vulnerability and the grace to be a support system for the rest of the family.
I will write more as I reflect on this for my #reofkindness post. Thank you for this inspiring post and this laudable initiatives.
LOVE YOU LOADS FOR YOUR KIND HEART ❤

  6. This has been a day I had to tell myself to put negative self-thoughts in the trash…more than a couple of times so this is timely for me. I printed out the list of “helps” so I can ponder them during the week. Thanks.
