The best rulers are scarcely known by their subjects;
The next best are loved and praised;
The next are feared;
The next despised:
They have no faith in their people,
And their people become unfaithful to them.
When the best rulers achieve their purpose,
Their subjects claim the achievement as their own.
I love this because it applies to so many areas of life. I read this and the first thing that came to mind was supervisors, managers and bosses I’ve had over the years. Then as I reread it I thought of how that applied to me as a mom, wife, and woman. It makes me think about the kind of person I want to be. It’s easy to say which one of those I want to be, but do my actions reflect that? Are my choices in line with that?
