As I was walking home yesterday from running errands, a reusable bag with groceries and loaves of fresh baked bread poking out of the top in one hand and a package of delicate European desserts in the other, I realized what a wonderful chapter my life was in. I’ve always loved the idea and the romance of living in a small European town, old roads, rustic buildings, familiar faces, writing. The simplicity, one local grocery store, an evening stroll in the town, a tasty yet inexpensive wine paired with an artisan cheese as you sit on the balcony and look at the stars. A few years ago this was a fantasy, something I would daydream about as I sat stifled and caged in my cubicle. Now, this is my reality.
I’m thankful for the peace that I have, the low stress in my life. I’m thankful for the beautiful weather, the gorgeous sunny days and the crisp mountain air. I’m thankful for my family’s health and unity. I’m thankful for balance and serenity. When I got home from running errands feeling nostalgic and warm inside, I started getting lunch together. My grandparents live about an hour away and come to visit us once or twice a month. I’m grateful to have them in my life, that my girls can look back on their childhood and remember their great-grandparents. They will be more than faces in a picture. They will have memories of laughs, hugs, kisses and smells. My grandparents have gotten to see both of my girls learn to walk and talk. They have been able to see another generation in their family grow. For that I am very thankful.
So as my grandparents left with a container of dessert to go, I looked back at the day and thought of what a wonderful chapter my life is in. A chapter that I hope continues over the course of many more to come. While my fantasy may not be the same as yours, don’t box yourself in and think you can’t make it a reality. Life is meant for living, and we might as well enjoy it. So whatever is holding you back from living a life that is more fulfilling, meaningful or just plain enjoyable, take a look at what you can do to make a change. Jot down a plan and see if you can make that fantasy a reality. Take a look at where you are at today, what are you thankful for? Be grateful, but don’t settle.
